IBM anticipates that advancements in quantum computing could result in the first quantum cyberattack, known as Q-Day, within the next decade. According to Antti Ropponen, an executive partner and leader in data and application security at IBM Cybersecurity Services, early quantum attacks are likely to come from highly resourced organizations, potentially including nation-states, and will focus on high-value targets. Any organization that relies on cryptography for encrypting sensitive data should begin transitioning to quantum-resistant cryptography by adopting encryption methods that comply with emerging post-quantum standards.
